You do not need professional measurements to get a useful quotation — but you do need honest ones. A few careful minutes with a measuring tape turns a vague enquiry into an estimate you can actually plan around. Here is how to do it properly.

What You Need

  • A steel measuring tape (fabric tailoring tapes sag and mislead)
  • Somewhere to write each window down — phone notes are fine
  • A second pair of hands for anything wider than your arm span

Always Record Width First, Then Height

Window furnishing is quoted as width × height, in that order, and always in millimetres. Mixing the order is the single most common cause of a wrong quotation, because a 600 × 1500 window is a completely different job from a 1500 × 600 one.

Work in millimetres rather than metres or feet. Writing 1350 leaves no room for confusion; writing 1.35 invites a decimal point in the wrong place.

Measure the Opening, Not the Glass

Measure the full window recess — the opening the frame sits in — rather than the visible pane. Mesh and blinds are fitted to the opening, so the glass measurement will always come out short.

Take Three Readings

Windows are rarely perfectly square, especially in older flats. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and the height at the left, middle and right. If the numbers differ, note the largest for width and the smallest for height, and mention the variation.

Go Room by Room

Label every window as you go, using the name you would actually say out loud — “Bedroom 2 window”, “living room slider”, “kitchen above the sink”. A list of unlabelled numbers is very hard to work with later.

Do not forget the openings people routinely miss:

  • Service yard and kitchen windows
  • Bathroom windows
  • Small high windows above doors
  • Balcony sliding doors, which are usually the largest opening in the home

Note the Things a Number Cannot Show

A photograph of each window is worth as much as its measurement. Note anything unusual: existing grilles, air-conditioner units close to the frame, deep sills, casement windows that swing inward, or carpentry built tight to the window.
